Brisbane: If there’s one thing Jock Madden’s Magic Round field goal proves, it’s that life after Adam Reynolds might not be so bad for the Broncos.
The experienced and battle-hardened halfback steered Kevin Walters side to a grand final in 2023, going down to a 20-minute masterclass at the hands of Nathan Cleary.
The 33-year-old’s been integral to Brisbane’s rise back to the top echelons on the NRL, finishing 16th in 2020 and 14th in 2021 before jumping to second only two seasons later.
However, he suffered a torn biceps in Round 9, ruling him out until Round 22 and if the Broncos finish high on the ladder, it could be a blessing in disguise.
The 24-year-old had struggled to lock in a regular spot for the Tigers across the 2021 and 2022 seasons before signing to join as Reynolds’ understudy ahead of the 2023 season.
But with half a season under his belt to gain experience, Reynolds’ apprentice could soon become the master pull the strings at Red Hill.
“Mate, that’s him. What you see on the field is what you get, at training, away from training. He’s just a patient, nice kid,” veteran winger Corey Oates told foxsports.com.au.
“He does his job and asks questions. When you have that in a young kid coming through, you’re pretty confident and pretty excited for what’s ahead for him in the future.
“He’s getting to show his talent and what he can do, and him and Ezra (Mam) actually play really well together so it’s nice.”
Madden enjoyed his crowning moment, kicking a field goal in front of a bumper Suncorp Stadium crowd to down the Sea Eagles in the closing stages of their Friday night encounter.
