Christian McCaffrey is arguably the premier running back in the NFL, in a class all his own, and most certainly the most dangerous weapon on a loaded San Francisco 49ers roster.
It’s no surprise that the 49ers made a major commitment to McCaffrey, signing the 27-year-old to a two-year deal worth $38 million, which is essentially an $8 million raise to arguably the franchise’s most valuable player.
McCaffrey is now the fourth-highest paid running back in the NFL, by total value, but averages the highest AAV of anyone at the position, and for good reason.
There might not be a player across the league who is a better scheme fit for a head coach or offensive system than McCaffrey is for Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers.
Since McCaffrey’s arrival in the Bay Area, he’s played 27 games in a 49ers uniform and he’s scored 31 total touchdowns, including 11 receiving scores.
Not only is quarterback Brock Purdy — and the fact that he isn’t eligible to rework his seventh-round draft pick rookie contract until after the 2024 campaign the 49ers’ secret weapon to keeping so much talent intact but McCaffrey in a lot of ways is critical to Purdy and the offense’s success
